Alberta Primary Care Initiative

The Alberta Primary Care Initiative is a trilateral agreement between Alberta Health and Wellness, Alberta Medical Association and Alberta's Regional Health Authorities. The agreement outlines a provincial approach to improving the way primary care services are delivered in Alberta, by building on the strengths and resources that currently exist with Alberta's health care system.

The five overall objectives of the Primary Care Initiative are:
  1. Increase the proportion of residents with ready access to primary care.
  2. Provide coordinated 24-hour, 7-day-per-week management of access to appropriate primary care services.
  3. Increase the emphasis on health promotion, disease and injury prevention, care of the medically complex and care of patients with chronic disease.
  4. Improve coordination and integration with other health care services including secondary, tertiary and long-term care through specialty care linkages to primary care.
  5. Facilitate the greater use of multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care.
